thanks you, I am rewriting another example. to meet the definition of sustainable development, a project must minimize environmental impact and promote economic growth.

This is close. But here, the students don’t “meet the definition of effective learning.” A course would meet the definition of learning. You can say, “To meet the definition of effective English learning, a course must include regular practice and diverse activities.”

So, I think this is the definition. So it doesn’t meet the definition; it just is the definition. But you might say, “I wasn’t sure if that robot was human or not. I took a second look, but still couldn’t be totally sure. I wasn’t afraid of it, but it was a little strange. I think that meets the definition of ‘uncanny valley.'”

Thank you for your comprehensive explanations. The examples are ruther frightening, especially when you try to picture these tragic manslaughters. But they well illustrate the expressions. Besides all this , I think, it goes very well with a prior lesson about funerel ceremonies! We all know – only two things are certain – taxes and death! 🙂

Hey, I try to make these lessons relevant to everyone’s life, but I had no idea it would be that relevant!

Actually there are two kinds of manslaughter. One is “voluntary manslaughter” and another is “involuntary manslaughter.”

This specific definition would be specific to laws in the US (and every state is a little different) but here we go: Voluntary manslaughter is when you intend to kill someone, but there are circumstances that make this less bad than “murder.” This is not common, but there are two examples they give. One is if you are provoked in a way that a “reasonable person” would lose their judgment. If someone burns your house down, with your family inside, and the person is standing on your front lawn laughing about it, and you kill him right there, then that would be voluntary manslaughter. You intended to kill him, and it is illegal for you to do so, but he did something so bad that any normal person would lose their judgment. The second example they give is if you feel threatened, but you are not legally allowed to kill someone. For example, if an intruder comes into your house and you just woke up from a nightmare, and you believe the intruder threatens your life, and you kill him … only to find out it was your neighbor who was trying to steal something from your refrigerator, then that is illegal. You thought your safety was at risk, but it really wasn’t. It was illegal to kill that person, but this was not the same as planning a murder.

You can say that voluntary manslaughter is a type of killing that is bad and illegal and intentional, but which nonetheless does not meet the definition of murder.
