Great example, just one small thing. “grow closer” is a process, but “when” describes a point in time. “When the alarm goes off (at a point in time), I have to get up.” In this case, you can say “…as Friday grows closer, my co-workers…”

A couple things. With the word “anxiety,” if you’re talking about how you feel, you can say “My anxiety”. If you don’t say “My anxiety” you’re talking about the condition in general. (“Anxiety among teenagers has increased with the widespread adoption of social media.”) Second, in your example, I’m picturing you standing in line and getting closer to the front of the line. If that’s the image, you want to say, “As we got closer to the front of the line.” However, you can also say, “My anxiety increased a lot as the line to get on the roller coaster grew shorter.” “Grow closer” though is much more about the passage of time. You could say, “My anxiety increased a lot as our trip to the amusement park grew closer.”
