When I was a teenager my mum promised that she would buy me the laptop that I wanted but when we went to the mall she went back on her word and bought the cheaper one.

This makes sense. It might sound better to say, “…so he went back on his word”

“Alliance” tends to be formal, structured, permanent. In a case like this, you might say a president cut a deal or made a deal with opposition parties (to achieve a short-term goal like passing a big law).

The President was loosing support in Parliament, then he went back on his word and made some alliances with opposition parties.
