This is a great example. But you can use a different tense here. The whole thing is in the past, but you’re placing the start of the procedure farther back in the past. I would say, “The procedure had just gotten going when the surgeon arrived.” Also, if you say “the late” + a person, it means that person is dead! https://grammarist.com/usage/the-late/
