After “focus on” you need an object (a noun). You can say, “…but I need silence to focus.” or you can use “focus on” with an object, “…but I need silence to focus on what I’m reading” or “…to focus on my book.”

Sometimes it is not easy to focus on one specific task. When I commute to work by using the urban railway there are so many announcements of delays and specific conditions in the trains – it is really hard to focus on listening to PLAIN ENGLISH, even though I’ve got my headphones on.
