Fantastic use of “fend for myself.” “Overprotected” is a word and that is fine in this case. However, a great English word you can use in this situation is “sheltered.” That’s when parents overprotect their kids, so that their kids have a harder time when they leave the house. You can say, “I was sheltered as a kid, so I later struggled to fend for myself in the dorm.”
