In reply to Claudio. "Distance yourself" usually goes with an idea or a person, not a substance. I would say you can "distance yourself from people who use too much tobacco and alcohol" because they would be a bad influence on your health, or "distance yourself from situations that cause you to use tobacco or drink too much alcohol."

I am thinking about the quote “Art is the elimination of the unnecessary” from Picasso. If I am nor wrong that one has link with “to distance yourself from something”. I said because sometimes I want to distance myself from some coworkers, in that way is like art because I want to eliminate their commentaries. I don’t know it’s just a thought.
