Great example. You might want to say, “having a coffee”: “While my boyfriend and I were having coffee yesterday, our parents’ stories came up in conversation.” Or, if you went out to a café, you can say this: “While my boyfriend and I were at coffee yesterday, our parents’ stories came up in conversation.” You can say “at coffee” if you set up an appointment or date to meet out somewhere. This is common in a business setting, but you can use it in a personal setting too.
