We are soon into the mid-August holiday season, and this is one of a few seasons in which the flow of goods from the farms is significantly interrupted: even farmers need time to recover from heat, and make time for themselves. (Like this?)

“came as a surprise” is correct. One tip: I wouldn’t say a supply chain stops. You might say the supply chain is interrupted. Or you can say, “the flow of goods from the farms stops”. But “stops” is pretty strong a word. You might say “slows down” or “is interrupted” because it’s seasonal and expected to start again.

Therefore, it came as a surprise when I went to a supermarket in the next town that countless varieties of fruits such as plums, pears, peaches (and blackberries, which I had never seen before) were lined up in huge shelf, cheap and fresh as it can be. I even found slices of fish just caught, which were sold at reasonable prices; we had them for supper tonight, and it was delicious.
