haha I love it – that’s a perfect example. The phrase in English is “sense of direction.”

Interestingly – and I didn’t realize this until your example – we don’t usually use pronouns with “at the mercy of” … the way we say it is, “I’m at her mercy” or “I’m at his mercy.” You would say, “I’m at the mercy of my wife” or “I’m at her mercy.”

Exactly … “During the flight, we are at the mercy of the pilot’s decisions.” You can also say, “at the mercy of the pilot.” We are under his (or less commonly her) control!
