“As far as I know” is correct here, and also good in the past tense. You can say: “…on time, but after many hours of waiting, I realized I was wrong.”

In Brazil we say “transgenic” that means GMO in US, here when a food is GMO there is a yellow triangle with big T inside it, but the science way to say it is like you mentioned before “ganetically modified”.
And “for animals to digest” is more natural to say than “to be absorbed”, the second one means something different than the first one, now I see it. Thank you again!
