Just looking at this again (copying it into the Sunday email!) you can say, “Has an edge on” if you mean they have an advantage over the others.

“due to the exceptional speed that gave him an edge” can become: “…defeated a lot of boxers in their prime because he had exceptional speed, which gave him an edge.”

The science is above my head, but they are good questions.

This would be true, but potentially a tautology (i.e. “The winner had an edge” is something that is obviously true; if he won, he clearly had some kind of an advantage.) So it would be common to say, “The winner had an edge because he came prepared to every round of interviews” or “The winner had an edge because he had worked at our biggest competitor” etc.

Are we sure it respects the diversification of varieties? Could it mix irreparably with already existing varieties? Could introduce genes trigger intolerances to the element of origin? Are the costs of GM seeds affordable for poor populations? Are they reserved for the big and intensive industry?

After a few steps, only three candidates reached the last stage of the process. The winner had an edge over the others.

It never hurts to at least be aware, right?
